Every range has that guy. You know the one. He’s easy to spot: unsafe, loud in all the wrong ways, and somehow manages to make everyone else in the bay uncomfortable. At C2 Tactical, we want you to have a great time — and not be the cautionary tale.
So, let’s break down the most common range faux pas and how to avoid becoming that guy.
- The Muzzle Sweeper
This is the person who treats a firearm like a laser pointer in a PowerPoint meeting — waving it everywhere except downrange.
Fix: Always keep your muzzle pointed downrange. Think of it like a compass: if your barrel points anywhere but the target line, you’re off course.
- The Endless Talker
Usually spotted holding up the line because they’re giving their friend a 20-minute TED Talk on ballistics… while everyone else is waiting to shoot.
Fix: Instruction is great, but keep it short and sweet while on the line. Save the full lecture for post-range tacos.
- The Brass Dancer
Casings are hot, and they fly. Watching someone suddenly break into an improvised salsa when brass goes down the shirt is funny — until safety goes out the window.
Fix: Wear appropriate clothing (no tank tops, no deep V-necks), and if brass finds its way in, freeze the gun first, then dance.
- The Ammo Hoarder
This one spreads out gear like they’re moving in for the weekend. Four boxes of ammo, three bags, and a small armory across two lanes.
Fix: Be courteous with space. Bring what you need to the firing line, keep the rest tucked away behind you.
- The Hollywood Reloader
Racking the slide with exaggerated flair, fast-draw holstering like John Wick, or slamming mags into place hard enough to echo in the next county.
Fix: Smooth is fast, fast is safe. The movies don’t have an RSO watching. You do.
- The Range Ghost
This is the opposite problem — no communication at all. They leave brass everywhere, targets shredded beyond recognition, and gear scattered like breadcrumbs.
Fix: Pick up after yourself. Reset your lane. Leave it better than you found it.
Bottom Line
Good range etiquette isn’t about rules for the sake of rules — it’s about safety, respect, and making sure everyone enjoys their time. If you wouldn’t do it at your friend’s house, don’t do it at the range.
At C2 Tactical, we’ve seen every version of that guy… and we’d rather see you become the guy (or gal) everyone wants to shoot next to.
